Plot Summary
A voice actor is reading a script for a documentary about a man named Tiny "Mud Music" Jones. Tiny was a music collector who brought music from all over the country back to a recording school during the Dead Era, the height of a zombie plague. Tiny collected more music than any other individual during this time. He also took three trips into a zombie-infested Appalachia in search for a legend called "Mud Music." The voice actor is guided by a man in his headset that instructs him to read different sections of a script. The voice actor names some of the artists that Tiny got recordings from, as well as the different styles of music that arose throughout the country during the zombie plague. Then, the man starts reading about a conspiracy theory about the "Mud Music." The first expedition Tiny took into Appalachia, he saw trailers and folk art and heard mountain music that had remained unchanged since the 1920s and through the zombie invasion. The second expedition, Tiny came back with a corrupted recording. He described the music as "Mud Music" in a whisper, then cried and beat his fists on his head when he heard the unearthly tones. He was obsessed with the recording, and he listened to it over and over again, swearing that the music was under the ruined recording and the singers were speaking to him. The voice actor is getting more jumpy and nervous as he hears this story. He starts reading about Tiny's third expedition, which he did not return from. Another collector returned to the recording studio with a cassette that he claimed was given to him by Tiny. He said Tiny had been covered in cuts and bruises, and that he said to take the tape directly to the studio. He also said he had to go back, because "they" would be looking for him and "they" would know what he had done. The recording had sounds of zombie attacks and human screams, as well as a discernible line saying "they obey the Mud Music." No other collectors were able to bring back music from Appalachia. The recording studio was vandalized with spray paint reading "Don't come looking for us again or we'll come back for you." One of the founders of the recording studio was recently given clearance to go into the "dead zone" of Appalachia, but border patrol guards were soon approached by a group of zombies who they shot. The zombies were carrying seven zombified heads, one of whom was the founder of the recording studio. Another head was older and possibly belonged to Tiny. The voice actor asks to take a break to get water. He is left with the image of the severed heads on his computer screen, and he jumps when the lights are turned off and the voice in his headset says they will get him after the break.
