Plot Summary
After arriving at the Indiana Auto Works, a Black man named Josh discovers an application for the NAACP at his workstation. The application is extremely racist, including questions like: “How many hours a day are you usually sober?” and “If you were given a passage and 5 dollars would you go back to Africa?” Josh immediately knows that Emmett has left this application for him as a racist attack since their hatred for each other has been building for the past three years, and the other workers are waiting for the two of them to finally fight it out. While Emmett had explicitly communicated his hatred, Josh never said anything out loud but had decided that if he were to ever kill a white man, he would kill Emmett because of the man’s hatefulness and racism toward him for the past three years. Emmett is not the only white man Josh hates, however. In fact, he hates all white men in Indiana, even the ones who smile at him, because he knows that they are secretly the same as Emmett and believe that Black people should “stay in their place.” Josh approaches Emmett, making sure that his knife is in his pocket, and he nervously tells Emmett that he thinks that he left something by his chair. Emmett says he didn’t forget anything, but he thought that Josh might be interested in filling out the application. The other workers begin to place bets, and Josh tells Emmett that if he doesn’t apologize, he’ll cut him up. Emmett pretends to pick up the paper and then strikes Josh with his hammer. In their scuffle, Emmett falls on top of Josh, and everyone sees Josh’s switchblade slice Emmett. Emmett makes another man give him a swig of whiskey, and they continue to fight. Someone says they should make the fight fair, so they toss Emmett a knife, too. Even so, Josh finds an opening and stabs Emmett, but as Emmett falls to the ground, everyone is completely silent.
