Plot Summary
While in hostile territory, a military convoy is hit with several explosions. A sergeant and privates Schulz and Leroy manage to survive. However, they are stranded in the Iraqi desert with no food or water. Furthermore, if they travel back down the road, they will be forced into contact with hostile soldiers. To their surprise, a fourth survivor wanders towards them. Schulz checks her for concealed weapons and confirms she is a U.S. soldier. Major Lena, or “Majorlena”, takes charge. She scolds Leroy for trying to catch the attention of the helicopters overhead, which fire at him. The sergeant notices her eyeing Leroy’s chest, but disregards it as sexual attraction.
After sheltering in the shade of an overhang, dehydrated and sweltering, Major Lena orders the sergeant to come with her to the remains of the convoy for supplies. She says the third truck was not badly hit. As she and the sergeant approach the truck, the sergeant observes the swarm of flies flying above the wreckage, attracted to the scent of the now-burnt sugar that the convoy was transporting. The driver’s face is badly burned, but as the sergeant is searching for containers, he sees Major Lena leaning her face close to the driver’s. When she notices the sergeant watching, she yanks off the driver’s tags and claims she wants to give his family closure. The two collect water and return to the privates, but Leroy is dying, having been shot by hostile soldiers while attempting to run away. He dies, and the remaining three soldiers hastily bury him in the sand.
Still stranded and starving, Schulz and the sergeant weigh their options. The sergeant notices Major Lena looks strangely well, as if she hasn’t been without drink or food for a day. The sergeant volunteers to collect some of the burnt sugar and bring it back. When he returns, Schulz appears to be in a deep sleep. He does not wake when shaken, and the sergeant looks over at Leroy’s body, now uncovered to the waist. Something has eaten part of his chest. The sergeant suspects Schulz, suffering from heat exhaustion and hunger, may have done it. That night, the sergeant tries to sleep, but wakes momentarily and finds Major Lena has slightly shifted towards him. After managing to fall asleep, he wakes to a horrible sight. A swarm of flies gorges on Leroy’s body, then transports his blood and flesh to Major Lena, lying nearby. She tells her “little ones” to come towards her, mouth open for them to land. The sergeant retreats to the wreckage of the convoy, luckily getting picked up by a patrol the next day. He tells them to look for three more people on the ridge, but they only find two bodies.
