In the present, a young woman works at a fast food restaurant. Her father left her mother for another woman, and she does not believe he's coming back, even though her mother continues to hold out hope. She meets her father's new lover and feels like he is worn down and defeated, though she doesn't mention this to her mother. At the same time, a regular customer at the restaurant asks her to run away with him. She ignores him. Instead, she starts dating a drummer she met at a party, even though she is not attracted to him at all, and their relationship seems robotic. Her father's lover becomes pregnant, and her mother despairs.
