A baseball player recounts the worst losing streak of his career, when in the depths of despair and drink, his team's manager befriended a quirky midget named Pearl.
At first, the players despise Pearl for laughing at them and frequently insulting them for their poor playing, but they despised their manager more for joining in and generally failing to lead them appropriately.
After playing their first game with Pearl in tow, the team was close to winning for the first time in weeks - and their best hitter was coming to bat. However, at the last minute, their manager asked to sub in Pearl in the man's place.
After much confusion and debate, the umpire had to allow it, and Pearl went to bat. At first, the manager's strategy seemed to be working - each pitch was a ball, and soon they'd walk the bases to victory. However, the last throw, Pearl managed to hit. The men had to run and Pearl was so slow he lost them the game.
Outraged, the manager picked Pearl up and threw him like a baseball. The center fielder catches him. Fans, excited, flood the field. But after that, Pearl is nowhere to be found.
Later, as the team headed to their next game, they found the tension between them broken and were able to laugh together. They win all their next games, and even make seventeen hits in one game.
