Plot Summary
Truus, a Dutch au pair, is employed by Gloria to tend to her young five-year-old son Christopher. One day, while at the grocery store, after Christopher clumsily drops and breaks some of the groceries, Truus is approached and assisted by Robbie who helps her exchange the soiled items for new ones. Later, Truus, Christopher, and Robbie head to the beach where, while Christopher plays near the edge of the ocean, Robbie shares that he is on vacation for 2 months from his job in Saudi Arabia. That evening, Truus receives a call from Robbie, and the two meet up at a bar after which point they spend the night together in Robbie's boarding room. Meanwhile, at dinner, Gloria remarks to her boyfriend Ned that she is glad that Truus has found someone as she is less likely to return the “erotic feelings” she’s noted her son Christopher has for Truus.
Soon after Robbie returns to Saudi Arabia from vacation, Truus receives a letter from Robbie, and as with all the letters from him that follow, she folds it and places it in a drawer. One morning, as Truus is out picking up Christopher from nursery school, Gloria goes into Truus’ room and reads one of the letters sent from Robbie. The letter arrests her, describing Robbie’s trysts and sordid solicitations of young girls and boys. She opens the drawer and reads the rest, all of which are similarly intoned. Distraught, Gloria calls Ned over to her house to fire Truus and threatens to involve the FBI. Gloria watches from the house as Truus says her goodbyes to a passive Christopher and remarks, “They always love sluts.” Much later, and after two other nannies, Gloria happens across a photo of a woman who looks strikingly similar to Truus; she wonders what ever came of her.
