Plot Summary
Steve is an up-and-coming candidate for governor who is favorable amongst the voters because his father, who had been a senator, had a good legacy to pass down to him. Many people, both the current governor and campaign managers, think Steve would be a good choice for the position, in part because of his father and because he could be molded to grant them their desires. Clari is Steve's wife and she has a bad feeling about the whole ordeal, afraid of being in the spotlight and of fulfilling this role for millions of people. Clari tries to hint to Steve that maybe if his career in politics doesn't work, they can start a band like they always talked about when they were younger. Just before a big night where Steve is supposed to be elected as a candidate, an old fling of Clari's visits her and tries to soothe her fears. He assures her that it won't be as difficult as she imagines and that her and Steve are good candidates for the people. Nonetheless, Clari keeps hoping something will sabotage the night and stop Steve from becoming a candidate. Clari's prayers are answered when a man bolts up to their car as they're driving to the location, screaming at them and throws something inside. When he's tackled by troopers, Clari sees that he had a gun and thinks that it might've been better if he had just shot them, rather than toss a skunk into their car. The night proceeds without a hitch after that, Steve giving speeches and handshakes. They want to go to their favorite restaurant to eat after the event, and on the way there, Steve concedes that he thinks he's gotten his alcoholism under control, to such an extent that he could have one drink that night without a problem stopping. Clari agrees, trying to sabotage him since it had been a rule of the campaign that Steve get his addiction under control. Clari wonders, though, if Steve too is aware that he is self-sabotaging.
