Plot Summary
Anthony Quade is an expert cameraman for Nine Planets Films, Inc. Nine Planets Films is a popular film industry based in the city of Hollywood located on Earth’s moon. This film industry focuses on creating films across the nine planets in the solar system, including work on asteroids. The Moon’s Hollywood is densely populated with budding actresses and is now gated from the public, i.e. any actress or actor who attempts to come to this Hollywood will be charged fifteen-thousand dollars or be forced to serve fifteen years in prison.
Anthony Quade is currently working on Space Bandits, a film projected to make considerable amounts of money at the box office. While shooting a scene on the moon, Quade receives a message from the chief of the corporation, Van Zorn. Van Zorn urges Quade to ensure that the film is completed by the deadline while Quade reassures him that he only must complete a scene on the asteroid, Eros. To Quade’s dismay, Van Zorn informs him that Eros is not able to be used as it is going to collide with another eddy, which would kill anyone who is filming on the asteroid at that time. Quade calls a camera expert named Peters to inquire about the dilemma. Peters encourages him to use another asteroid, Ganymede, which will soon be at perihelion.
Taking this information, Peters goes to lunch to meet Greg, who had been doing the original logistics for the expedition to Eros. Greg informs Peter that he overlooked the asteroid's trajectory because of family drama; Greg’s daughter, Kathleen, ran away from Earth to the moon to become an actress. No one can find her and if she is caught, she will be subjected to legal trouble. Then, Sandra Steele, a prominent moon actress with a hostile persona, enters the room. Sandra is the enemy of Quade and is close with Quade’s boss, Van Horn.
Quade heads for his ship to go to Ganymede, where he will meet with a crew to film the remaining scene. A bit after taking off Quade discovers a stowaway on his ship. The stowaway is Greg’s daughter, Kathleen. Together the pair head continues to Ganymede where they encounter stowaways, aliens, and other life forms like Bouncer, who becomes a companion to the crew. Some of the forms are kind, like Bouncer, and others are dangerous. Quade and his team battle in fast-paced action scenes. The crew travels across the asteroid until they arrive at the film camp. Upon arrival, they discover that they are unable to film as, during the preparation for the film, workers discovered radium. As there is a battle for radium, a mining company rushed to buy the asteroid and harvest the radium. After being forced off Ganymede because of the mining, the crew decides to rush to Eros to see if they can film anything. Upon arrival at Eros, the crew quickly managed to build a set. As the asteroid explodes upon impact with the Eddy, Quade manages to film it from his ship. Kathleen encourages Quade to develop the film where they discover a fourth dimension.
After returning to the studio in Hollywood on the moon, Von Zorn was pleased with the pictures. He is displeased with Kathleen and quickly squashes her cinema fantasy. Van Zorn is then presented with a restraining order banning him and the Star Mine Company from further access to the asteroid Ganymede to save the life forms that they found there. Kathleen has a fight with Sandra Steele and is offered a position in the movies.
