A U.S. marine travels to China and visits a bazaar in Peiping. He has 400 USD in his pocket, making him a millionaire in Chinese currency, and is excited to shop. He comes across a coat stand, but when an older man tries to sell him a fur coat, the marine insults its quality. The older man walks away and reveals a young child hand-sewing fur patches together looking heartbroken.
The marine returns to his hotel but can't sleep because of his own meanness. He decides he's going to return to the stand the next day and give the boy, who he's named Li Chang, all 400USD so that Li Chang can be a millionaire. He falls asleep quickly.
The next morning, the marine is shaken awake by the pilot, telling him that the plane must leave for Hawaii. The marine protests, saying he has to do something first, but the pilot says he can do it next time he comes to Peiping. The marine flies towards Hawaii and never returns to Peiping. He thinks of Li Chang often.
