Plot Summary
In modern day L.A., a cyclist named Nathan stumbles upon a woman as she climbs over a chain link fence. Enthralled by her, Nathan helps her down and asks her what she’s doing. She explains that she wants to follow and map out a river. Her name is Sofia. Nathan asks her for her number, but since she doesn’t have a phone, he agrees to meet her at the river the next day. Nathan meets Sofia at the same place the next day and explores the river with her. He continues to meet her every day at the last place they left off the day before. They follow the river towards the ocean. Nathan is both interested and uncomfortable with Sofia's relationship with the river, and thinks she might be the perfect kind of loner to match his own solitude. When they have nearly reached the end of the river, Sofia explains that she doesn’t want to continue on to where the river meets the ocean, because it becomes man-made and that makes her feel bad. Nathan suggests they go together the next day, and it might feel different when he’s there. She agrees, but when the next morning comes, Nathan doesn’t show up because he doesn’t think Sofia will. He does what he’s always done since his divorce — preempt disappointment. A few days later, Nathan visits the ocean by himself. He finds that Sofia’s relationship with the water has stayed with him.
