In a sci-fi world, five physicists want to learn more about the structure of spacetime at the Planck scale. They live on Cartan, a planet surrounded by black holes. They plan to create clones and send the clones into a black hole so that they can do research into the Planck scale. The only issue is that the clones have a high chance of dying during this trip.
Prospero and Cordelia, a father and daughter from Earth, want to report on this scientific journey. The two come to Cartan, and the father compares the journey to Greek myths. Cordelia offers to have herself cloned and she secretly wants to stay on Cartan. When the clones successfully survive the black hole, the father pretends the scientists left because they wanted to contact Gods. The scientists are upset at the father’s falsehoods, and the father is forced to leave. The lead scientist, Gisela, tells Cordelia that she can stay, but the girl decides to return home with her father. In the end, the clones live long enough to gather more information on the Planck scale. The scientists are overjoyed, even though the mission was not wholly successful.
