Faith walks with her friend Ruth in New York City, expounding on her vision of happiness. She imagines a life where she has work to do, but she is not a slave to capitalist systems. Where she has a family that gives her purpose, but also friends that brighten up her life. She considers love: whether it would tie her down or loosen her up. Ruth hears Faith out, but she admits to being confused: she’s just not sure what Faith means when she refers to happiness. Ruth’s comment breaks Faith out of her reverie. She laments how this cruel and unequal world will keep her from her desires.
