Plot Summary
Clare and Louella have been happily married for five years and enjoy nothing more than traveling the world together. On an extended vacation in France, they happen to notice a one-legged man crossing the square. A second one-legged man returns across it, but he's an entirely different person. Although the mysterious encounter fades from Louella's mind, Clare can't let it go. One day, when Louella has plans without him in Paris, Clare drives back to the little town to investigate. At first, he feels foolish, unsure why he undertook such a drive for a meaningless bit of confusion. Yet, as he settles down in a wineshop, he's surprised and validated to see both one-legged men enter and buy a drink. Only, before Clare knows it, five more join them, until an impossible number of one-legged men fill the shop. He watches in awe as a green-eyed witch appears and tells the men she's lived longer and been torn apart more than any of them can imagine. She beckons the youngest man, and they all chase after her as she runs into the night. She vanishes before Clare's eyes, and when he returns to the shop, there's only two one-legged men. Confused, Clare asks them where the rest went, but as he begins to describe their companions, the two remaining tell him all the men he saw have already died.
