Plot Summary
A young boy named Cody bikes past houses in his small town and thinks of how each person has wronged him and the ways he will take revenge on them. In particular, he imagines how he will get back at the Dalmeyers, the kids who all made fun of him and the nosehole sound he makes. As he does laps on his bike around the neighborhood, he dreams of a crowd cheering him on as he sticks a wooden lozenge up their hose so that it explodes the next time they try to use it. And this revenge is so clever that when scientists come to investigate the impossible explosion, they’ll recruit him to work in their lab, where the Dalmeyers will then see how great he is and apologize for their bullying. As Cody passes his own house on the bike, he thinks of his mom and her boyfriend Daryl, who also both ridicule him and comes up with a word for Cody's mistakes: “FIRPO”. They make fun of his nosehole sound and his chubbiness, which has only further resolved him to complete this lozenge revenge and put an end to FIRPO in the world. However, as he gets to the Dalmeyers’ house, he accidentally passes it and has to do a quick turnaround, putting himself right in the path of an oncoming car. The collision sends Cody flying, and all he can think about is how angry his mom and Daryl will be that he ruined his bike and got blood on his clothes, especially because of how they reacted when he slipped once in a school play. The owner of the car comes over to him and all he can think about is how ugly and FIRPO the man is, even though he can’t move and the man tries to tell him how God loves him before he goes. Cody dreams of apologizing to his mom for being such a FIRPO son, and he dies.
