Tyler, a young boy living in a village called Plandome, wakes up early one morning to find his father taking a shower and his mother still getting ready for the day. As the father comes out of the shower, it becomes his responsibility to dress the child as his mother is taking longer than usual. The mother makes breakfast and everyone eats. Then, the mother drives her husband to Plandome station and takes her son to kindergarten. Tyler recounts the plot of a cartoon series he is watching to his mother as they drive.
As his mother is dropping him off, the boy is told that Mrs. Skinner is going to pick him up and take him to the playground after kindergarten, where he will play a while with his friend Nori. Well, he isn’t sure if they are exactly what you would call “friends.” Tyler has a small crush on Nori and Nori does not care for him.
In the playground, Nori runs circles around Tyler and taunts him, calling him a “suckfuck,” a word she learned from her older siblings. Tyler doesn’t know what the word means, but he is able to infer that it has a negative connotation. Later, back in the car on the way back home, he tells his mother that Nori Skinner is a suckfuck, as a reaction to which he is slapped across the face. Afterwards, horrified at her own action, Tyler’s mother hugs him tight and cries for a long time. In the future, this would become the only real memory Tyler has of his mother.
