Plot Summary
When Lalibela is born into the royal family of Ethiopia in the twelfth century, he is surrounded by a swarm of bees but remains completely unharmed. His mother interprets this as a blessing, and Lalibela soon becomes her favorite child. Thus his oldest brother, the current ruler, becomes jealous of him and has him poisoned, but instead of dying, Lalibela experiences a dream-state where he is transported through space and time. When he awakes, Lalibela decides to journey to the farmlands to better understand his visions. There, he meets a young woman named Kibra, and the two soon fall in love. Because of Kibra's intelligence and Lalibela's ambition, the couple are able to achieve amazing technological developments with the help of the scientists and craftspeople in their community. Lalibela returns to his family in the capital fifteen years later to introduce them to this new technology and propose the development of a spaceport. When he returns, his brother again sees him as a threat and orders a guard to kill him. However, the guard is fond of Lalibela's mother and sees the joy her son's return has brought her, so he kills the ruler himself instead. When Lalibela is then offered the throne, he refuses, but Kibra convinces him to lead for the sake of the people, so that he may share his technological findings with the rest of the country. Lalibela and Kibra then rule Ethiopia together, and as their technology continues to advance, they are able to develop a way to time travel. The couple decides to travel to the future, but when they enter the year 3000, the planet is ruled by dragons. The dragons warn them that in the twenty-first century, the world will somehow become uninhabitable for humans, causing the dragons to take over. Disturbed by this news, Lalibela begins to regularly travel through time, searching for a way to save the planet, while Kibra stays in Ethiopia to rule. The people Lalibela meets simply dismiss him and call him crazy, but, finally, in present day Addis Ababa, he meets a young girl who believes him and agrees to join his quest to save the world.
