Plot Summary
In Galveston, Texas, Pablo’s wife Joanna is sick with a virus, presumably COVID-19. They cannot afford treatment or cleaning products, and the hospitals are overflowing. Pablo struggles with the fact that his wife is ill and that he cannot help her. As a commercial fisherman on the gulf, he does not make a large profit for his hard labor. Despite Joanna being sick, Pablo decides to help on another fishing trip with Captain Joseph Weiss. The crew will consist of Nick, Alex, and Steve, along with Pablo and Captain Weiss. They meet up before they leave to talk and have a beer. Steve reveals to Pablo that he stole a large sum of money from his allegedly bad father and has it hidden in his car. He plans to move to Oregon and open a coffee shop once everything opens again. Pablo says he can keep his car at his house. Steve promptly takes his car from the pier, leaves it at Pablo’s, and returns for the trip. The the next morning, they leave for the trip. On the way home Pablo cannot stop thinking about the possibility that his wife is dead. Captain Joseph has Steve and Pablo work together, and during a break, Steve takes a nap. While Steve sleeps, Pablo steals his car keys and hides his flotation device. Steve does not notice the missing keys and doesn’t ask about a flotation device while working. When no one is around, Pablo knocks Steve out and into the ocean with a buoy hook. He makes the scene appear as if Steve fell and drowned. Pablo goes downstairs for a while and then comes back and makes a scene about Steve being gone. He now has all he needs to ensure that his wife survives.
