When Nancy’s family moves to a coastal Mississippi town on the heels of her father’s firing, a local boy takes interest in her for the summer. For a while, they go around town on dates, drinking and sleeping together, until one day she goes to the beach and it pours hot rain. Her boyfriend Rob doesn’t believe her, and as they go through their routine together, she realizes her dissatisfaction with his superficial friends and conversations. At dinner, she leaves for the nightclub next door, where she finds a man who was on the beach with her when it rained. She’s always wanted to go to New Orleans, and he takes her on a trip there. When she gets back, her family and Rob are distant and upset. Nancy tells him she never felt at home in his social scene. Meanwhile, the other man waits to take her on another adventure.
