Plot Summary
Doctor Wallace and his assistant, Les Parker, ride their horses to a home in the middle of the plains during the winter. Les makes a comment that it is extremely cold and the doctor observes the home they arrive at. It is a ramshackle home and there is a woman peering from the front window at them. Her hair is a mess and she is drooling. The woman greets him at the door and tells Doctor Wallace that he's late. She explains that her name is Nan and that her husband, Sam, is very sick. Nan repeatedly explains that Sam is careless for going out into the cold without his jacket on, which is why he is sick. Doctor Wallace checks over Sam and notices how sick the man is. Nan complains that her husband is very dirty and never listens to her. She also warns Doctor Wallace that Sam tells lies and to not believe anything he says. Sam reaches for Doctor Wallace and explains that Nan is actually not a human and that she cursed him with this disease. However, Nan called the doctor because she realized the curse went too far. Nan complains about how dirty people are and how clean her house is. The doctor notices the room is very clean and that the clock seems very loud. Nan orders the doctor to put the clock down because she wants Sam to see how long he's been wasting away being sick. Doctor Wallace tells Nan that her husband is going to die and Nan goes to the kitchen to make a phone call. She tells a woman named Mary on the other side of the phone that Sam is going to die. Nan also explains that her house is extremely clean and that she's been a good wife, but Sam never appreciated any of it and never went to church. Nan further explains that she isn't sure where Sam will go after he dies, but she is definitely going to heaven for being a good wife. Doctor Wallace looks at Sam and realizes that the sick man is about to die. Doctor Wallace then looks out the window to see Les huddled under blankets waiting for him to finish the check-up. Nan argues that she has been a wonderful wife and woman and that the neighbors can attest to it. Doctor Wallace watches as Sam passes away before leaving the home. He hears Nan scream through the phone that Sam died. As Doctor Wallace leaves, the entire house is silent.
