David is a fifty-five-year-old man in Indiana who makes frequent morning hikes to Shanty Falls, his local waterfall. One morning, he encounters a young woman who is half-naked, severely injured, and abandoned in the waterfalls. David has to hike back down the trail to call the policed and by the time he returns to the scene, there is another young man there. The young man turns out to be the young woman's boyfriend and admits to harming her because she was going to expose their secret relationship. The boyfriend does not want this to happen as young woman has Down syndrome and does not share his obscenely wealthy background.
The boyfriend admits to harming his girlfriend in front of David, but once the police arrive, he changes his story. While the sheriff knows David and believes the young man to be guilty, the police still must proceed with an investigation. Even though David will be witness to the case, the outcome does not look hopeful. While the young woman is in the hospital with a coma, the young man's family hires an incredible lawyer to protect him from any charges.
David decides he will take matters into his own hands. He goes to visit the boyfriend and his family. David then lies to them and tells them that the girlfriend died in the hospital, leaving the family completely shocked.
