Plot Summary
Vic’s two young daughters have a favorite bedtime story: _Goodnight Moon _by Margaret Wise Brown. Every night, he reads it to them before they fall asleep. He himself also loves the book, as do many other parents he meets at a backyard cookout, but his wife, Teri, finds the book tedious and boring. Their marriage is failing and they can’t seem to stop quarreling. Once, when Vic visits the public library with his daughters, he checks out three other books written by Margaret Wise Brown, who seems to have passed away a long time ago. They are called _The Runaway Bunny, The Important Book, _and _Mr. Dog. _He reads them all to his daughters that night. They find _The Runaway Bunny _to be forgettable, and _The Important Book _slightly more interesting but bizarre. _Mr. Dog, _however, is everyone’s favorite, and especially grabs Vic’s attention. After putting the girls to sleep, he tells Teri that she has to read the books too, but she refuses. Vic goes on a Wikipedia spiral and finds out about Margaret Wise Brown’s life. He orders two more books by her. Teri doesn’t approve. Vic orders yet another book anyway. On his birthday, Teri gifts Vic a deluxe edition of _Goodnight Moon _as a peace offering. He doesn’t like it very much, because the point isn’t to own a deluxe edition of anything. Growing more and more obsessed with the deceased author, Vic takes his daughters to go visit Margaret Wise Brown’s old house. The girls are confused about the purpose of the trip but they don’t ask any more questions after Vic buys them fast food and hot chocolate. The house resembles the topsy-turvy house in a _Mr. Dog _illustration and the girls are impressed when a dog that looks just like _Mr. Dog _comes out of it.
