Plot Summary
Conor and his ex-wife Reese attend his elderly father's birthday in Ireland under the pretense that they're married, even though Reese's affair still hurts Conor. On the way to his father's house, they pass a memorial for local men who survived capture during the Irish War of Independence, and Connor admires their bravery.
Upon arrival, Conor finds out his father's been seeing the elderly neighbor, Agnes. Reese thinks they are in love, but Conor's sister, Joanne, thinks Agnes is trying to marry him for his house. She was snobby to them when they were kids.
The group goes to the Titanic Museum. Against Reese's advice, Conor tries to dissuade Agnes from marrying his father. To his surprise, she tells him she intends to move in with her daughter, but is hesitant to tell his father. She thinks that in his declining state, she might not have to.
When Reese departs, she gives Conor a postcard with their names written inside a heart as a soft apology. Conor is touched. Later, when he is in the car with his father, he thinks about wanting to protect him from the truth for as long as possible. He concludes that the local heroes were lucky, for never having to deal with personal suffering like his.
