Ted drives from San Francisco to the northernmost part of California. He and his wife Kathy need more than a quarter of a million dollars by the next day to keep their startup, MicroWeather.com, afloat. Kathy has sent Ted to visit Rome, who is her ex-lover and a very successful marijuana farmer. Kathy and Ted hope Rome can lend them the money.
Earlier that day, one of Rome's farmhands had showed him multiple places where the fence around Rome's fields had been broken. Rome spends the rest of his day digging a hole near the breaches, and then covering it up with debris.
When Ted arrives, Rome decides he doesn't like him. However, Rome has already made up his mind to help out Kathy, so he hears Ted out. When Rome gets a call partway through their conversation, he tells Ted he wants to show him something. They get in Rome's truck together and drive out to the fence where Rome dug the hole. They find a kid stuck in it, screaming at Rome. Rome threatens to kill the kid. Ted asks Rome if he's really going to kill the kid, and Rome says he won't; he'll just cut off a couple fingers.
