Plot Summary
In a county in Montana, a sheriff and his deputy receive news that a woman is being held hostage at a nearby Congregational Baptist Church. The two men get into the deputy's car and drive towards the scene. The deputy, a man nicknamed Double Tough, lost one of his eyes in a fire and has replaced it with a glass one. He informs the sheriff that during today's Christmas Eve service, a young man came in with a gun and grabbed a woman in the congregation. He announced he planned to kill her for "all our sins." Outside the church, other cop cars have already gathered. The officials present inform the sheriff and Double Tough that the hostage-taker's name is Sam Erlanger, and that he's likely on heroin. The sheriff decides to go into the church, and Double Tough follows behind him. Inside, the sheriff sees Erlanger holding a woman by her hair, a gun to her head. Erlanger is speaking aloud to God. When the sheriff tries to talk to Erlanger, the man explains that God demands a sacrifice for the country's sins. Double Tough steps out from behind the sheriff and explains that he hears God's voice, too. Double Tough walks towards Erlanger, waving his arms and speaking about God, and then stops and puts a hand to his ear, as though listening for God. He tells Erlanger that God does demand a sacrifice, but not a full human sacrifice. Double Tough reaches up and removes his glass eye. He holds it out to Erlanger, screaming that God wants him to have it. Erlanger drops his gun and runs from the church, and the men hear the sounds of the officials outside arresting him. Double Tough puts his glass eye in his mouth to lubricate it, and then pops it back into his socket.
