Plot Summary
Maurice and Trevor are designers who are visiting the historic Mouselode property to see if they can imbue the ancient grounds with new life, in preparation for the opening of the Mouselode Hotel. Dating all the way back to Henry VIII’s time, the hotel and accompanying maze has passed through several different owners over the centuries. Given its illustrious history, when Maurice and Trevor arrive, they are met with several other designers hoping to impress the project manager. Two other designers, Tessa and Thelma, display a clear preference for redesigning the maze over the hotel, which piques Trevor’s interest, although Maurice is still indifferent towards it. After exploring the maze, Trevor is increasingly interested and begins mapping ideas for the maze, which annoys Maurice, since he believes the property manager’s real priorities lie with the hotel, not this silly maze. Trevor is only further engulfed by the maze when Thelma and Tessa share some background on it. A century ago when it was owned by the Dunlop family, an old man’s body was found in the maze. Though he was believed to have passed due to natural causes—what with his age—the state his body was found in was cause for concern: it appears an animal found him first, having mauled his body down to the bone. Later, Maurice is dozing off in one of the hotel’s rooms when he gets a text from Trevor with a selfie; unbeknownst to Trevor, Maurice spies a strange-looking creature in the corner, then bolts out to the maze to rescue Trevor. Wandering inside, he realizes how strange the maze is, with a statue facing the hedges, obscuring itself. Hearing something crashing through the hedges and approaching him, Maurice runs towards an opening and finds Trevor; whatever startled him before seems to have disappeared. Trevor is going on about how he was following a woman in gray, tattered clothes who was walking a dog-like beast. Maurice is able to talk him down and the two exit the maze. On the final day of their visit, Maurice is relieved to finally be done with the place; he intends to present their design to the property manager and leave. Shortly before they’re supposed to meet the manager, however, Trevor goes missing again. Knowing he’s wandered into the maze, Maurice trots in after him, listening for the clicks of his measuring wheel. Though he can constantly hear the clicking, Maurice seems to always be on the other side of the hedge. Suddenly, the sound of a large animal galloping emerges, followed by a scream that is silenced as quickly as it begins. Maurice runs to an opening to find himself in the center of the maze. He climbs an incline to get a better vantage point and is dumbfounded to see the maze stretch out into infinity in every direction beyond him. Two skeletal female figures appear, donning grey garb and Maurice immediately recognizes them as the Dunlop sisters—one of which he mistook for a statue previously. They tempt him towards an expansive pit which Maurice realizes is crimson with blood and lined with skulls. He wants to run in the opposite direction, but one sister tells him it is the only way out. Summoning his will, Maurice makes his decision.
