Plot Summary
Whistler performs on tour around the country with his wildly popular act, imitating bird songs perfectly. He's the most talented whistler in the world, yet his acrobat lover doesn't see his talent because she only performs at county fairs, where Whistler's quiet works struggle to reach grandstand audiences. When Whistler's boss asks him to fill in for the sick parachute jumper, who was planning to do an impossible triple jump, Whistler realizes he's found an avenue to revenge. He agrees to the jump with a plan in mind. He'll release the first two parachutes, each of them earning him consecutively more money. His lover will be ecstatic, as she only values Whistler for his money so she can buy clothes to look beautiful for her second lover, who Whistler calls "the wop." But Whistler will never release the third chute, instead plummeting to his death and denying her a final payout. Boiling with rage and sorrow, Whistler enacts his plan to a tragic perfection. However, as he releases the second chute and makes no move to open the third, a corner of the third chute snags on the wind. It doesn't open fast enough; the third chute balloons as Whistler's shattered body strikes the ground.
