Yuna, a young woman living on Earth, tells Oliver, a man that she has been dating, that she was to leave Earth and live on one of the seven destination planets that have been made available for Earthly people to settle on. Oliver decides that he would rather stay on Earth, and Yuna goes without him. She boards the ship and goes to sleep in a stasis pod, which will wake her when they reach the first destination planet.
Yuna awakens a few thousand years later, and sees that the humans on the spaceship's crew have evolved into frightening, spider-like creatures. One of the creatures fills Yuna in on what has happened since she went to sleep, and explains that the gravity on the planet they are about to reach is too strong for humans to live on land. If she wanted to go there, she would have to evolve into a fish-like mermaid creature. Yuna decides that this is not what she wants, and elects to return to stasis in her pod.
When she next wakes up, she is encased in a spacesuit and the crew and spaceship have evolved into one entity. The disembodied voice of the ship tells her that she has been in stasis for over eight thousand years, but that there are still a few thousand people in stasis on the ship waiting to reach another planet. The ship gives Yuna the option of waking one of the other humans up so that she can have a companion and repopulate the ship, but Yuna decides that she would rather go into stasis a final time. She promises herself that whatever planet she wakes up near will be her new home.
Upon Yuna's final awakening, she finds a mysterious, human-like creature with its tentacles sticking into her body. Yuna is frightened, until she realizes that the creature is transmitting images of a hospitable planet into her mind. She finds a small group of other humans on the ship, and they decide to go to the newest planet together.
A few more years in the future, Yuna and her mates look down at their babies, and enjoy the beautiful yet different scenery on their new planet. Yuna has hope for the future.
