Despite their tempestuous relationship, a young woman (in a slightly off version of the contemporary US) creates an online fundraiser in an attempt to follow her younger sister to the land of the dead to tell her of their parents' death by murder and suicide. The sister, a contrarian, had bought bus tickets to a portal and emailed her friends about the land of the dead as a party destination just before her disappearance. Still short her fundraising goal, the young woman gets on the bus and traces her sister's footsteps only to find the land of the dead to be a sobering landscape littered with forgotten dreams, memories and smells. When she tries to take her sister back over the threshold, the young woman discovers that her sister had not entered the land voluntarily as she had thought, but rather as a third casualty in their father's murder suicide.
