In the far future, a young girl is imprisoned when her parents turn her in for religiously deviant thoughts and behaviors. She talks with the artificial intelligence that runs her cell, learning that this prison is a paradise, full of simulations that could make her happy for the rest of her life. However, she wishes to escape. The artificial intelligence tells her that over 150 humans have escaped before, and that there is a security weakness in the prison complex—one that she works to exploit by enacting a complicated, nuanced scheme. She is surprised that the artificial intelligence does not stop her inventive plan to get seven people to break her out. In fact, the artificial intelligence admits that it deliberately leaves open the opportunity for humans to escape because it wants to better understand why some humans want to escape this paradisal prison that can stimulate anything anyone could wish for.
