Plot Summary
Nina and Jay are a couple living in Massachusetts. Jay, a trans man, works in a greenhouse where he is constantly dead-named. Nina stays at home and writes and bird-watches. One day, Nina dresses in Jay's clothes, including one of his binders. She drives to a college and walks around a lake, thinking how long it is since she and Jay had sex. When she gets home, Jay is home. She's worried he'll be upset since they've never shared clothes, but instead he's aroused. They have sex. Afterward, Nina sees the geese leaving to fly south out the window. Jay notes that she's about to cry to see the geese go, but he thinks: "If geese can’t hack it here, good riddance [...] I want nothing incapable of change [...] I want plants that can withstand a flood, insects that won’t apologize for taking up space, things that shouldn’t thrive but do because conditions are finally ripe."
