Plot Summary
Clarence is on an expedition through the midwestern Kansas area with his younger brother, Will, to discover the fate of their grandfather who went missing fifty years prior in the 1960's. Only two remnants of their grandfather, Will Sr., were ever found: his tape recorder and camera. Will Sr. worked as a 'songcatcher,' gathering diverse forms of music from all around the country, and during his final trek, he caught one last enigmatic sound. Hardly able to call it a song, the audio recording he left behind is a painful and enraged cacophony, sounding almost alien. The camera revealed mostly plain landscape photos, save for one of a woman whom Clarence and Will presume to be the singer from the recording. After years on the road pursuing answers to the whereabouts of their grandfather, Clarence no longer finds the charade entertaining and wants to call it quits, however, Will is invigorated by his mother's deteriorating health to find answers before she passes. Following up on a lead, the duo meet Paulette, whose grandmother told tales of a singing woman who matches the location. Enlisting Paulette's help, they glean more information from her grandmother, which guides them directly to the location from their grandfather's photo. Entering the basement of a decrepit house on the land, they find something otherworldly. In the center is a stone and metallic statue of sorts that resembles a meteor and carries the gravity of something ancient. Allured by the statue, both Will and Paulette make contact, and Clarence futilely tries to separate Will from it before saving himself and fleeing the room. Later, the Will and Paulette exit the room, yet they've been transfigured. Shifting their priorities to the statue, neither of them care to return to their lives and stay there. Once Clarence has returned to life, he gets sporadic, cryptic voicemails from Will, describing a coming apocalypse and his continued efforts to find his grandfather in this newfound annex of space-time.
