Plot Summary
In the rain, the person thinks about how they’ve been turned away from jobs because of their neurodivergence and their ask for accommodations. They think about how, at a young age, they missed their chance to be a chosen one, coming into magic, which happens to about one in three people during their teenage years. They walk away from the bus stop and think about how, in job interviews, their stims and ticks are immediately noticeable, which their interviewers consider threatening. They think about how they’re chronically ill during the pandemic. They wonder how they’re going to survive. While walking, they trip and lose feeling in their body.
The person wakes up in a white room on a white couch. They see their things around them and put their shoes on right away. On the white room’s floors are colorful rugs which they put their face into, lying there for a long time. A gentle voice then commends them on having found a second world, in the rugs, and introduces xemself. Xe explains that it’s a house of choosing where chosen ones go to other worlds. Suddenly, the person feels a sense of hope that they have a chance at magic after all. However, they don’t want to choose a world, as they’re afraid of what it would entail. They figure that chosen ones must be picked early, as later on, people will be too tired and worn out to do it.
The gentle voice explains that the person isn’t being asked to go into another world. Rather, they’re being asked to make new worlds for chosen ones to go into. Xe explains that xyr world-making power entails using fashion in order to make worlds, whereas the person has proven just now that they can make worlds another way. The person thinks about how they could’ve been a chosen one long ago if only they had the money to take a test. Despite the person’s worries, the gentle voice assures them that there will be accommodations, opportunities to change and even step down, as well as good compensation and insurance, and even training, if they need it.
The person, still hesitant, feels that they can’t do it. The gentle voice instructs them to look up at the ceiling, a blank expanse of white. A feeling then materializes in their minds, which they cast onto the ceiling like a canvas. The gentle voice commends them on their first try and says they surely do have the potential to make worlds. The person thinks about how, all those times, whenever they were lost in sensation before, they were making worlds. Now, they feel that they can do it: make worlds for others to pass into.
