Plot Summary
On the day of the festival, the man gets ready in the changing room. His friend calls out to him, asking him if he’s ready. He looks worried, as it’s been eight years since he’s been exiled. Every year, he performs a ritual at the river on the festival day, sacrificing parts of himself in hopes to find the thing which will take him back to his realm. However, his search has never yielded any results. He thinks about how, four years ago, he met the friend he’s talking to now, who dance alongside him at such rituals. He knows that this will be his last dance, as he has nothing left to sacrifice. He wonders why he was even banished at all.
The friend helps the man put on his costume, and they dance their way outside. At the river, they all dance, while the man partakes in the ritual. A black hole then forms, as usual, where everyone throws their sacrifices inside of it. The man tries to search for the capsule of souls, which will take him back to his realm, but instead, he loses stamina and ends up falling inside of the black hole.
The friend tries to save the man, but she’s too late. The other dancer tells her to get her act together and let him go, as there’s no way they can ever save him. Together, they’ve danced for the last four years with the man, and now the man is gone. The dancer says that he knows that the man isn’t of the same world as them, which the friend knew all along but kept a secret. He says that he only kept it a secret for her because he didn’t want her to become and outcast. He finally says that the man only kept her around because he needed her in order to get back to his realm. Eventually, they see something in the river. The friend charges toward it, the man’s body.
The dancer takes the man’s body and the friend out of the river and brings them back to his house, where his father is. The father has cast a spell around the man’s body to prevent his spirit from fading. The friend says she’ll cast a spell to revive the man’s soul, though perhaps at the cost of her own life force. The dancer tells her not to, but the father says she can do as she wishes. When they argue, the father says it must be her destiny and that her destiny cannot be infringed upon. While the dancer is restrained down by a spell, the friend proceeds with the spell, screaming out loud as the father chants.
The man experiences the void of death, though he starts to see the friend’s face in his mind. She calls out to him. Wraiths circle him in his slumber. He awakens and thinks about why the friend sacrificed herself for him. He remembers how he saved her when she was little, as her father was an outcast and she became a thief to get by. Back then, he realizes that, through her affinity for spells, he may be able to harness his own technique and open a portal back to his realm. Now, he has done it, using his powers to get the capsule of souls. He uses it in order to come back to his realm.
Now, in his realm, the man doesn’t feel happy. He heads toward the Tower of Souls where the sage is, the person who will guide him into the realm. The sage notices that he isn’t at all happy with returning. The man says he feels alienated and that, although he has accomplished his goal, he doesn’t feel a sense of purpose anymore. He wishes to bring back the friend, as he wants to talk with her and know why she did what she did. He is willing to sacrifice his transcendence for it.
Two hundred years later, the man returns to the village. It is bigger, but the festival they host is still the same. He stands beneath a mango tree, where he recognizes a mark on it, made by the friend a long time ago. Eventually, a girl comes up to him, and he recognizes that it’s her. She asks if they’ve met before.
