Plot Summary
The girl is told by her doctor that her leg will have to be amputated due to cancer. Although she will be able to use a prosthetic leg after, the girl’s mother still cries about what has to happened. All of a sudden, the girl makes a strange request, which is that she wants to keep her leg after it gets cut off. The girl’s mother is taken aback, but the doctor says it’s possible.
The girl’s mother gets a call from the girl’s uncle. The girl’s uncle, a lawyer, tells the girl’s mother that the girl is suing her, that she wants to go into law per family tradition, that she should work it out with her daughter so that no one has to go to court. According to the girl’s uncle, there’s nothing legally preventing the girl from acquiring her leg after it gets cut off. He also says that someone is going to come interview the girl about her leg, as it’s become local news.
After seeing a local news article about the leg, the girl’s mother wants the newspaper to be sued, but the girl’s uncle says there was no legal ground. However, the girl has been bombarded with media requests and invitations nonstop ever since word got out. The girl’s uncle insists that nothing can be done legally, that the girl’s mother should just oblige her daughter and let her move forward with getting the leg back.
One night, the girl gets a call from a business owner who says that he can receive her leg post-surgery and properly treat it in order to safely keep the bones. While the procedure would cost a lot, the business owner then says that a museum would happily cover the costs so long as the bone is donated after her death. When asked why the museum would do that, the business owner says that the girl’s story about her leg has become a nationwide sensation. He then asks her why she wants to keep it in the first place, to which she says she just has a feeling.
When the girl explains to her mother what the business owner said, the girl’s mother gets upset and starts smashing plates in their kitchen. She says she can no longer bear to deal with the noise of everything while her daughter is dying. From then on, they agree to separately see a counselor in order to work out their problems through a professional.
In the counselor’s office, the girl talks about how her leg is doing. He asks the counselor about his collection of skulls which he keeps in his room, and he says that each has a story. He then goes on to talk about how some forms of meditation require imagining flesh falling off of one’s body, as well as phantom limb syndrome, which refers to a syndrome where people still feel the pain of their lost limbs. However, the girl stands her ground on wanting to keep her leg. They then start to talk about the girl’s mother, who isn’t speaking to the girl nor signing the paperwork for her leg.
For the next two weeks, the girl becomes anxious. She learns more about her amputation, which freaks her out, and she is suddenly overcome by the fact that everything will soon change after her surgery. Her mother still isn’t talking to her, and she starts to feel bad for what she’s put her through. One week before the surgery, she feels like she’s missing out because she isn’t able to go outside during the start of summer break, nor does she really have any friends who are checking on her.
In the counselor’s office, the girl talks more about her father’s death, how she did a lot with him while he was alive. The counselor suggests that she may be overstimulated but without meaningful connection due to her trauma. The girl then asks him if her mother has changed her mind about the leg, to which he says that he doesn’t know, as she’s still deciding. She says that she’s been meaner to her mother as of late, and he says that’s unfortunately normal for teenagers. She talks about her father’s dream to be buried in a forest where he can decompose.
In the operating room, the girl is put to sleep. When she wakes up, her leg is gone. She asks for her mother, who comes in right away with the rest of her family. Following them is the business owner, who holds a plastic bag with her leg inside. He hands it to her as she reunites with her mother.
