Plot Summary
In the couple’s bedroom in their Silver Lake apartment, the woman tells the man that she’s going to have sex with someone else, though it’s only acting, as it’s televised. She asks him if he’s jealous, but he says that he’s not really jealous. The man thinks back to when he first met her. He was at a bar with his best friend, the person who encouraged him to get into acting and thus move all the way to Los Angeles in the first place. At the bar, the man sees his best friend hitting it off with another girl. Past them, he sees the woman, with blue eyes. The morning after, he finds out that her eyes are actually brown, that she was only wearing blue contacts. He finds out that she’s an actor just like him.
Laying in bed with her now, the man asks the woman to say more about her part. She says that she’s supposed to be a crime victim who hooks up with a detective. If she does well, she says, then she may be a recurring role. She asks him again if he’s jealous, but he says he doesn’t think so. He then gets up, gets ready, and gets going for his double shift. He walks, instead of drives, to the bar where he works.
At the bar, the man’s mother calls. He thinks about how she’s probably still disappointed in him for becoming an actor. Ever since high school, the man has wanted to act. When he eventually moves to Los Angeles with his best friend, his mother castigates him for his line of work, which makes his economics degree worthless. However, when the man gets together with the woman, his mother finds it more acceptable. Now, in the bar, as he preps ingredients for later, he thinks about his best friend, how his best friend allegedly moved back to Chicago. He wonders whether he should call him, though he doesn’t. He spends the rest of the day in regret.
The next day, the man wakes up beside someone he doesn’t recognize. When she turns to face him, he sees that it’s the woman. Since he last saw her yesterday, her hair has been dyed blonde. He thinks about how she often dyes her hair for her parts, including the one she has now. When she wakes, she talks about how she’s supposed to play a dumb blonde for television. Again, she asks him what’s bothering him about her job. He doesn’t answer. Instead, he recalls his last audition ever, in which he walked out before it even happened, after which he went to a nearby drag brunch.
After a few days, the man and woman kiss. Suddenly, the man feels something in her mouth, which she explains is braces. However, she explains that the braces aren’t for television but rather for correcting her actual underbite. He points out that she’s always changing how she looks, which helps him realize what’s bothering him. All along, he’s been bothered by her acting, how easy it is for her to change who she is in order to fit into what her audience wants.
The man recalls what happened with his best friend one year ago. A few days after he first sleeps with the woman, he asks his best friend to meet with him. He eventually gets into his car, and they talk. The man confides in him that he has feelings for someone he shouldn’t. Soon enough, the best friend realizes that the man is talking about him. The man realizes that the best friend has always known. Awkwardly, the best friend leaves the man’s car. Although he says that it’s cool, he disappears shortly after to move back to Chicago. Now, one year later, he realizes that he doesn’t actually love the woman for her, but rather for her acting.
The man is getting drunk at the bar where he and his best friend used to go. He hasn’t been there for a year, not since the day he first met the woman. He knows that he won’t run into her or her friends here. He wants to prove his best friend wrong and go for another woman. As the bartender pours his drinks, the man tells him that he’s trying to meet someone. Together, they survey the crowd. He shoots his shot with one woman, but it goes embarrassingly wrong. Eventually, the man loses interest. He then explains to the bartender that his girlfriend is about to sleep with another person—which is somewhat the truth—and the bartender feels sorry for him. They talk some more, during which the bartender reveals that his boyfriend has been cheating on him. Physically, they get closer and closer together.
