Plot Summary
Upset from an argument with her husband, the woman gets dressed in bar clothes and heads out for drinks. She gets to Soho, in Manhattan, and chats with the bar’s owner, whom she’s known for years. A man then sits beside her, listening to her as she talks about her friend’s stint with magnetic therapy. The woman goes on to say that she tried the magnetic therapy but now can’t find the magnets to return to her friend.
The man starts to chat with her one-on-one, after which she says that her other friend’s husband is allegedly ringing up hundreds of dollars on her credit card through phone sex. Eventually, she wonders about him, and they introduce themselves to each other. The woman merely says she’s a spy, but the man says that he’s a network exec. The man asks her if she recognizes him from homeroom, which she thinks is a flirtatious line and doesn’t believe it. Eventually, an old friend of the woman’s comes in. The man sneakily places his card in her hand.
From then on, the woman thinks about the man even though both of them are respectively married. When she calls him, they talk flirtatiously for over an hour and get to know each other better. He asks for more of her contact confirmation, and she obliges. They write to each other over email daily for months, but she turns him down whenever she asks to meet. Her husband is unsuspecting, and she does a good job hiding her correspondences from him.
One day, the man calls the woman and asks her out for lunch. They decide it’s a date. On the day of, the woman dresses up nicely and even buys a matching set of underwear, as she thinks he’ll like it. They still call in the days leading up to their date, still flirting with one another. She feels that she loves talking to him, both on the phone and over email, and wonders whether her relationship to him is more than just talking.
On their date, they sit down for a fancy dinner. They talk for a little while, catching up with each other’s lives. Afterward, they get a hotel room and head upstairs. She thinks about what she’s about to do: cheat on her husband. They undress, and he admires her matching underwear. They have sex, after which the woman runs into the bathroom and locks herself inside.
In the bathroom, the woman overhears a conversation he has on the phone, which makes her think that his life’s details have been lies to her. When they talk, he admits that she was his first biggest crush back in high school. She doesn’t know what he’s talking about, but he tells her what his name really was before he changed it to the one he has now. She remembers how he asked her to prom, which she rejected.
The woman runs out of the hotel but realizes, when outside, that she forgot her wedding ring in her room. She heads back inside and awkwardly explains to hotel staff what happened. However, when she finally gets back to her room, she sees that both the man and her wedding ring are gone. All that’s left is a note from him, instructing her to call him. She wonders, briefly, what her husband will think with it being gone, and she wonders, too, about the man.
