Plot Summary
Samanta, a twenty-eight-year-old Hispanic woman, lives in New York City selling Kutco knives. Her mother passed away two years prior, and Samanta still grapples with grief. On a house visit to a potential customer, Samanta hopes to sell a few knives to break even for the day. As she tries to deliver her sales pitch, however, the customer, a woman named Consuelo, doesn't listen. Consuelo says that she sees that Samanta is unhappy and shrouded in grief. She offers to cut Samanta's grief out of her. Samanata is hesitant, but when Consuelo offers to buy two sets of knives, a $2000 sale, Samanta agrees. First Consuelo shows the saleswoman her own arm, where she has a small scar on her wrist. She demonstrates the minor incision. Consulo then takes Samanta's arm and makes the cut, removing a small grain-sized lump from under the skin and flicking it away. On her way out, Samanta sees a rat, but Consuelo says not to worry about the rats. Samanta immediately feels much better. At home, she is able to finally go through the garbage bags of her mother's belongings that had been sitting in her room all this time. The following day, she radiates positivity, happily going about her life, smiling while selling knives and while riding the subway. When an unwanted memory of her mother surfaces, she is able to easily let it pass. She begins to plan her future. The next morning, Samanta sees a rat on the windowsill that bothers her, but she tries to ignore it. She sees it several more times throughout her day. She heads to Consuelo's apartment in search of answers, but when she gets there, she finds that a new tenant has moved in. Consuelo didn't leave a forwarding address. The new tenant is in a bad mood, complaining about all the rats. Samanta continues to see the rat. After getting drunk one night, she decides to take care of it herself. She takes a knife and swings at it, cutting off the rat's tail. The rat runs away before Samanta can do anything more. The rat isn't in its usual spot the next morning. Samanta goes about her day selling knives, but when she returns home, she finds the rat again. She picks up the knife, but can't bring herself to attack it anymore. After another memory of her mother, she realizes that while her grief is unbearable, it is also necessary and familiar. Samanta lets the rat come towards her, climbing up her leg and onto her knee. There she lets the rat stay.
