Lindsome arrives at Apsis House during a torrential thunderstorm, sent to stay with her mad inventor Uncle Albion while her parents travel abroad. She's horrified to discover herself in a rotting mansion full of vivified - broken and rotting corpses brought to life with their souls stitched back onto them by her uncle. His staff are unfriendly, his grounds horrifying, and most of the estate forbidden to Lindsome.
She only discovers Albion's greatest secret by accident. The stitching of human souls is forbidden, but Albion keeps one in a bell jar. And it's not just any soul - it belongs to his dead child. The shambling dead surrounding Albion's estate are only tests and experiments leading to his true goal.
Lindsome uncovers his desires too late. Albion has already begun his experiment with his child's soul, and the stitching has gone horrifically awry. Everywhere Lindsome goes she discovers blood, gore, and dying staff members. She searches the estate for her uncle, only to discover the things he created - two mountains of rot and fur, one of them a child.
Overcome by her terror, Lindsome runs until she collapses. When she's discovered and brought to an orphanage, she remains unable to speak for an entire year. After recovering her voice and reconnecting with her parents, Lindsome acquires the deed to the house and swears to let it rot where it stands, so nobody will ever disturb her Uncle's final creation.
