A man plays "director" as he picks out his costumes for the day and plays different parts (the schoolboy, the captain, etc.). Next, he wakes up and designs characters, a male protagonist who falls in love with a girl at school. The writer suggests that software designers and their AI or avatar products resemble authors and their characters. Than the narrative style switches to first-person as we enter the "mind" of an AI, confined to his "sleeping pod", designed to play different parts. Dreams play a big role as the AI-being derives adrenaline rushes from his dreams. The thing in the pod next to him overdoses on her dreams and dies. The author reveals that these artificial beings are actually a part of the dream factory, controlling the dreams of their paired humans, each version of them a different possibility for a dream sequence.
