Plot Summary
Ghost Street is a relic. Its inhabitants are frozen in time, former humans that act as characters for the entertainment of tourists that no longer appear. One day, a baby is found on the steps of a temple on Ghost Street by the great hero Yan Chixia. He is named Ning and given to a female ghost named Xiao Qian to raise. Xiao Qian was once a mother of several children, but eventually sold herself in pieces, including her soul, to pay for treatment for her children. Because Ning grew from a baby to a child, it was assumed that Ning was a human. However, Ning stopped aging when he was seven. He struggles with his identity as the years pass, coming to realize that he was unlike the other ghosts because he did not have a former life before he came here. He was designed as a toy that grows up to a certain age and then stops. He realizes that the ghosts on Ghost Street were a novelty for people, but he is a novelty for Xiao Qian. During Ning’s twenty second year, an apocalypse arrives in the form of metal spiders demolishing Ghost Street. In an effort to save Xiao Qian, Ning sacrifices himself to the spiders. Ning’s body possesses organic matter, causing the spiders to stop their activities when they tasted his blood, as they are designed to not harm living things. Ning dies with his head in Xiao Qian’s arms.
