Plot Summary
In Ohio, Travis Hayes is stuck in a traffic slowdown on his way home to his wife, Emma. Travis and Emma's infant son Cody is in the backseat. Emma calls to see if everything is okay, and Travis tells her they're stuck in traffic and will be home soon. Travis decides to get off the freeway at an early exit to bypass the slowdown. He realizes he is on the South Side, where he has not been in years. He used to spend all his time here — in and out of condemned houses, in the drug scene, in jail — and he drives through the neighborhood nervously. Travis met Emma in a health store, where she worked, and she has no idea about Travis' colored past. When Travis and Cody make it through the sketchy area, Travis spots a Popeyes up ahead and decides to stop for some fried chicken. Travis orders his food via drive-through, but his food takes a long time to arrive, so he parks his car and heads inside to pick it up. As he's leaving, he hears someone call his name, and turns to see Q, one of his dealers before he left the crime world behind. Travis owes Q money, and Q is a dangerous man. Q and his friends take Travis out to Q's car, and together they drive to an ATM so Travis can withdraw the money he owes Q. When they reach the ATM's maximum withdrawal for the day, Travis suggests they hit other ATMs nearby to get all the money; he knows he's not getting home without paying up fully. When Q and his men drop Travis back at his car, inside of which Cody is asleep, Q tells him they are cool. As Travis turns to walk away, however, Q calls out his name. Travis turns to see Q pointing a gun at his head. When Q presses the trigger, there's a click: the chamber is empty. Q smiles at Travis and tells him to "remember this." The men drive away. Travis gets in his car, checks on Cody, and begins to drive home. He wonders what to tell Emma when they arrive.
