Plot Summary
Brother Hightower arrives in a beautiful meadow on his horse and sees a small cabin with a pig pen. He approaches the cabin and finds a man named John Gentry. Gentry is talking to his pigs and Hightower introduces himself. Gentry calls out his wife Exa, and the couple ask where he is going. Hightower says that he is going to Pigeon River to lead a revival, but the Gentrys offer to have him stay for supper. Hightower washes himself in their home and as they sit down to pray over the meal a loud clanking of chains comes from one of the rooms along with a hiss. Exa says that the noises are their son Tolly who they have to chain up or he will wander into the pig pen and get covered in mud. She goes to feed him and John tells Hightower that they were told to send Tolly to an asylum, but they didn’t want to. Hightower says that their son is possessed by a devil. After supper, Hightower and John sit outside and Hightower tells John about when he was a farmer and angels appeared to him and he fell down out of fear. He was ushered up by Jesus Christ who told him that Hightower was to preach his name. Hightower was doubtful and so Jesus began to whip him and call him out for his unbelief. After Jesus left, the wounds could be seen on Hightower and he was able to read the Bible, even though he had been illiterate before. Then, he was able to heal a girl whose legs were crippled and he knew he was blessed by the Lord. Exa approaches Hightower and asks him if he can exorcize the demons out of Tolly. John says that nobody needs to bother Tolly, but Hightower says that if it is God’s will he will expel the demons. Exa unchains Tolly and tells Hightower that he is twenty years old but he is small for his age. Tolly reaches towards the moon and thinks it’s fire, which Hightower says is a sign he is possessed. He begins to pray over Tolly and the boy begins to resist, making John uncomfortable. They chain up the boy again and Hightower kneels to pray. He approaches Tolly again and tells the demons to leave the boy’s body. Suddenly Toly falls and the pigs in the pig pen begin to go crazy. John is unable to calm them down and they break out of the pen and run until they reach a bluff and throw themselves off of it into the water. Hightower seems impressed with his own power and tells the Gentrys to witness his holiness. John seems sad for his son who is going to be different now as it seems he believes the possession was what made his son who he is.
