Jonah is a 10-year-old who begins to act like a stranger in his own house. He forbids his parents from showing any kind of affection towards him and threatens to report them for abuse if they invade his personal space. Martin finds Jonah’s behavior very peculiar. Jonah’s communication with his parents falls to a bare minimum. Jonah conducts himself like an adult, does all the chores he is supposed to do with great responsibility, and takes care of his younger brother Lester.
Things come to a breaking point when Jonah is found reading an anti-semitic 9/11 conspiracy. Martin loses his temper trying to explain to the boy that they themselves are Jewish. Rachel and Martin take Jonah to a therapist. The doctor determines that Jonah is fine, although a bit too clever for his age, and suggests that Rachel and Martin should go to family counseling. Martin begins to resent his child and feels that he duped the doctor.
