Donald listens to his grandfather as he tells him a story about when the old man was young. The grandfather had been a helper at the church as a boy and would help prepare food with a strange priest named Brother John. Brother John would make the food and talk to the cockroaches that gathered in the kitchen. He would speak to them like they were sinners and he would tell the grandfather that they were God’s creatures like humans were. One day, after Brother John died silently in a chair, other church members tore off the wainscot of the kitchen and the room was full of cockroaches waiting around for Brother John.
