A bartender in Charlotte, North Carolina laments the loss of the town’s wrestling ring. Instead of wrestling, the town now has the terrible NBA team, the Hornets, which are hard to root for and inspire none of the same excitement that wrestling once did. Without his wrestlers, the bartender sees how soulless the town is. He observes the young people who come into his bar and believe that Charlotte will give them something that they couldn’t find in their own small towns. He’s sure that they will be disappointed.
He’s in a long-term relationship with Starla, a woman who’s comfortable with him but refuses to commit to anything serious. She doesn’t like to say “I love you”, nor does she want to get married. The bartender remembers the final wrestling match held in Charlotte, during which Starla screamed at the wrestlers. She was so invested in the love story they were performing amid the violence. That night, the bartender had looked at Starla after the action had calmed down, and it seemed like something had ended.
