Plot Summary
Walking home from the cinema one night, Pete, a movie buff, discovers a new store in his neighborhood called “Impossible Dreams Video.” He wonders how he could have missed the store before, especially given how close it is to his apartment. Perusing the shelves of Impossible Dreams, Pete is astonished to see that it contains DVDs of films that were never created. He comes across movies he thought had been scrapped before production, like the sequel to The Breakfast Club, and alternate versions of existing movies with different actors/directors, such as The Terminator starring O.J. Simpson and Return of the Jedi directed by David Lynch. Pete realizes the store must be from a parallel universe. He wants to buy and watch all its movies but runs into many difficulties: the alternate universe doesn’t take his universe’s credit cards or cash; it has different electrical outlets and DVD encryption systems. And when the store closes at 10, it disappears from the block and Pete can no longer enter. In addition, every night, the store appears to Pete later and later—first, 8:45, then 9, eventually as late as 9:30. Pete flirts and strikes up a friendship with the store’s clerk, Ally, who shares his love of movies. Ally struggles to make ends meet and often goes hungry, so Pete brings her Chinese takeout, which they share over discussions of their favorite films. When Ally calls out Pete for not knowing standard movie trivia, Pete explains that he is from a different universe and brings her the movies from his own timeline. The next night, Pete returns to Impossible Dreams, but it has disappeared. He hopes to find some memento from Ally, but nothing’s there. As Pete starts to lament the lack of closure, Ally calls out to him, having decided to join Pete in his universe.
