Plot Summary
Bertram Kyle sits at his desk with his typewriter and struggles to produce a story. He feels like he is on an island and remembers his wife, Louise, who he had a fight with about another woman named Betsey. His phone rings and he answers it and talks to his wife who tells him about a cocktail party that they will be attending that night. He agrees to go, but feels anger at his wife for suddenly pulling him out of his world with his voice and the fact that she has other people around her and he is all alone. He sits at his typewriter again and imagines that if he was another writer he could easily write, but nothing comes to him. He thinks about the coat hangers he has collected and sees them on the floor of his room. Suddenly he remembers his life, being born thirty years before and experiencing things from his childhood and then being born again in that instant. He feels like he is awake suddenly and he considers his ideas for stories and settles on one. He starts to write about a woman named Bettina who is in love with two men, Carl and Gerry, and is at a party and then meets Gerry at the night court because he is suing a taxi driver for stealing four dollars from him. She takes Carl to the night court and the three all go out to dinner with the detective of the case and are all in love with each other. The story flows from his fingertips, and Bertram Kyle seems to be in a groove that is uninterrupted by any mistakes. He finds himself weaving a beautiful plot between these characters and suddenly stops to lay down. He then remembers the cocktail party and he quickly gets ready to go. He meets the elevator operator in the building and he realizes that he has to pretend not to be crazy. As he gets to the street he is joined by the characters of his story who all walk with him to the party. He then enters the party alone and begins talking crazily to Louise and his friends.
