Plot Summary
A man and his girlfriend, Mallory, head to a farmhouse that their friends Chris and Anneliese, who are dating, have rented from a farmer. They've decided to spend their summer break there, and rest up before their return to grad school that fall. On the drive, Mallory and her boyfriend see a girl a few years younger than them crying, and a man behind her looking angry. Mallory shouts for him to stop the car, and asks the girl if she's alright and if the man hit her. The girl answers that he didn't hit her but that he is a jerk, although when Mallory tells the girl to get in their car, she refuses, as she does not want to leave. The whole prospect makes the man in the back angry, and Mallory's boyfriend tells Mallory that they shouldn't get in between a lover's quarrel. Mallory's boyfriend puts the child lock on the car and begins to drive away, despite Mallory's protest, and says that the girl didn't want to go with them. Once they arrive at the house, Mallory is furious with her boyfriend, and her and Anneliese bike back to the house to see about the girl, although when they arrive the couple is in their car and drive off. While the girlfriends check up on the girl, the boyfriends struggle to separate their dogs from the sheep that live at the farm. The whole debacle ends with all parties covered in blood and poop. The two couples go to a bar that night to blow off steam. While the boyfriend fetches drinks for the group, he reencounters the abusive boyfriend, who pushes him twice, which sends the drinks in his hand shattering on the floor. When he rejoins the group, he is angry at Mallory, and blames her for the whole thing and for involving them in private affairs. Later that night, the two are in another drunken fight when an object suddenly hits the boyfriend's shoulder. When they inspect it, they find it to be a steel mesh of some sort. Later they do some research and find that it may be a piece from a crashing satellite that Nasa has been tracking. Though Nasa estimated that it should've burned in the atmosphere, the two ponder whether or not this is a piece from it that managed to make it to Earth. Before the boyfriend can find out, Mallory throws it away, still angry at him. When he returns from dumpster diving without it, he violently grabs her wrist, but drops her after he sees the fear in her eyes. He leaves to blow off steam, and once again sees the abusive boyfriend with the girl, but convinces himself to remain uninvolved.
