Plot Summary
Boswell is a wrestler who gains national acclaim for his prowess. Though he starts out under a different name and management, once his manager dies, he restarts his career under a new identity as the Masked Playboy, with an imagined background as a millionaire's son who keeps his identity secret so that his parent's don't find out, although the real reason is so that people don't recognize him from his past persona. Boswell is very good at wrestling, although ability isn't the only factor, as he will come to see how politics play into wrestling. Often, the wrestler who wins is not the better wrestler, but rather the one who the crowd would prefer to see win. Boswell is scheduled to wrestle a notorious wrestler who has gone by many names, but now goes by the Grim Reaper. Grim solidified his name when he killed a wrestler during a match, but because the opponent had heart problems and shouldn't have been wrestling in the first place, Grim got off free. There are also rumors that he killed another person in South Africa under a different persona. Boswell is told by his manager that he's supposed to lose during his match to Grim, but this fact troubles him. Boswell seeks Grim out, saying that he wants to try a different routine, but Grim is difficult to track and the two can only talk just before their match. Boswell surprises himself when he tells Grim that tonight will be his last match because afterward, he's quitting wrestling. During the match, Grim is relentless, taunting Boswell and exerting immense strength and cruelty upon him. The crowd leans heavily in Grim's favor, cheering him on as Boswell struggles against him. At times, Boswell wants to end the fight, but then decides to keep it up because of Grim's incessant arrogance. Finally, when Boswell is on the floor, Grim does his signature move, making the crowd go wild. It knocks Boswell unconscious, and when he awakes he sees police, although he knows if he dies that Grim won't be charged, just as in the past. The crowd chants that Boswell is dead, and ultimately, he does die.
