Plot Summary
An orange tabby cat named Jeoffry spends his days fighting off imps and demons in his master's mental asylum. His owner is a poet who believes he's writing the Poem of Poems at the behest of God, but he has another solicitor - the devil, who believes that a lifetime of avoiding creditors and seducing wenches means the poet owes him.
The devil convinces Jeoffry to leave his master for one night, enticing him with a feast of cat foods that turns into rotten leaves after he eats it. While Jeoffry is away, the devil convinces the poet to write him a poem, signing away his soul in the process. Jeoffry, horrified, tries to fight the devil off and limps away injured and defeated.
The next night, the poet's finished draft is due, and Jeoffry can't let his master sign away his soul. He rallies the cats of the neighborhood for a final stand against the devil. While his compatriots distract the Adversary, Jeoffry sneaks by them and eats his master's drafts of the poem before the devil can take any of them. He feels his master's soul settle into his belly. Furious, the devil gives up and abandons the poet, who thanks Jeoffry profusely for saving him.
